What's Your Response?
There’s more to education than books and exams. Children are growing through different emotional and social stages—and they are asking questions that shape how they see themselves and the world.
The Orange Curriculum by Reggie Joiner highlights some key questions children ask at each stage. These questions are not just cute—they’re critical. If they’re not answered well, they leave gaps that affect a child’s learning, confidence, and sense of purpose.
Take a moment to reflect: how are you, as a teacher, answering these questions?
Early Years (0-5):
⏩ Can I trust you?
⏩ Why should I do that?
🎯 Implication: Build consistency. Respond with love and patience. Show them the “why” gently—this builds a foundation of trust.
Elementary Years (6-10):
⏩ Do I have your attention?
⏩ Do I have what it takes?
🎯 Implication: Listen closely. Celebrate effort and progress. Kids here need to know that they are seen and believed in.
Middle Years (11-13):
⏩ Who am I?
⏩ Who likes me and who do I like?
🎯 Implication: Be a guide, not just a teacher. Help students discover their strengths and navigate friendships with confidence and kindness.
Teen Years (14-18):
⏩ Where do I belong?
⏩ Why should I believe?
⏩ How can I matter?
🎯 Implication: Create a safe space for questions. Connect their learning to purpose. Let them see how they matter in class, in school, and in life.
Take time today to ask yourself:
1️⃣ Which age group do I work with?
2️⃣ What big questions are my learners asking?
3️⃣ How am I helping them find the answers?
